Making Sure Your Move Goes Smoothly

Moving can be stressful. It involves quite a lot of preparing, physical exertion, and a whole lot of time. Whether you're moving across the country or just down the street, there are plenty of things you can do to help make sure your move goes well.

Planning is Key

Before the big day, it's always a good idea to have your personal goods organized. Host a yard sale to sell off anything you know you will not take with you. You can also opt to donate them to a local charity. When it's time to pack, put boxes in each room, and pack everything carefully. Use paper and bubble wrap to secure breakable items. One of the most important things to do when it comes to packing is to make sure you clearly mark each box, indicating what is in it. That way, when you move into your new place, you can easily identify what is in the boxes.

If you're renting a moving van or truck, shop around to get the best rates. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get large items like furniture and mattresses into the truck without damage. If you need help, you can hire a moving company or enlist the help of close friends. Pack your essentials like medication, bedding, and toiletries in a separate carry on bag. If you don't, it will be especially difficult to get to them when you're tired and in need of your toothbrush and pillow.

Your New Digs

When you move in, make sure you determine where to put furniture before you do anything else. Get a feel for the different layouts of each room, and place your furniture in the room so you have plenty of space to move around while everything still looks aesthetically pleasing. Tasks like hanging pictures and artwork should be the last thing you do, after you've established where the bigger items will be placed.

Clean and then stock up your kitchen and bathroom first before unpacking things like trinkets and decorative items. Since you use these rooms the most, you'll want to have things like pots and pans handy. For the first few days, you'll most likely be very busy getting everything organized, so have some quick and easy meals planned for everyone.  Once you're settled, be sure to let loved ones know you have moved and what your new address is. Enjoy your new home!
